President Obama and soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that the economy is an area where they can work together on the issues of tax reform, expanding trade, and the budget.
Both men stated that the economy’s growth depends upon reforming the tax code, opening up trade for American businesses in the international market, and balancing the country’s budget.
President Obama and Mitch McConnell stated that closing tax loopholes will enable business owners to create more jobs, and that expanding international trade will enable American business owners to expand their business to an international market.
They further noted that balancing the federal budget and having the money to help American business owners to expand their businesses is the key to growing the economy.
According to CNN’s exit polls for the 2014 Mid-Term elections, the economy was the voters’ top issue.
More voters, 45%, ranked the economy as the most important issue compared to 25% who ranked health care as the most important. Illegal immigration received 14% of the vote, while foreign policy received 13% of the vote.
And when asked whether the economy is improving, 32% agreed that the economy is improving compared to 32% who said that the economy is getting worse and 34% who said that the economy remains the same.
The president and McConnell acknowledged that the gridlock is an issue they both face in trying to address the economic issues of tax reform, trade, and balancing the federal budget.
President Obama stated that he believes both sides can get around the gridlock by working on issues that they agree on and trying to find some “common ground” on more difficult issues like health care and immigration.
McConnell told reporters that the gridlock resulted in the “Senate not working.” And one of the ways he will get around the gridlock is by focusing on the committees, working on both sides of the aisle, and allowing bills to come to the floor for a vote.
McConnell also warned that any progress that can be made will be halted if President Obama uses his executive power to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants.
President Obama countered that Congress’ “failure” to act on the Senate’s immigration bill may result in him having to use his executive power as an option to deal with the issue of immigration.
